I have a solution to anybody looking for immersion with keyboard enabled. No root required! An app called "Immersive Settings" on the play store will give you access to the keyboard while in Immersive mode, and you can also disable immersive mode in specific apps. You will need to use ADB with your device, giving the app access to WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS.

Ok, so it does hide the nav buttons nicely…. BUT… keeps the keyboard from working. Really! The app even warns you about this. Uninstalling in 3…2….1…done!
